Toro introduced the first power mower for homeowners in 1935 and the first electric-start lawnmower for consumers in 1968. Toro produces 22-inch push mowers with electric- and gasoline-powered engines. Its mulching mowers are self-propelled. Toro push mower models start in relatively the same manner.
Clean a flat-surface area, such as a sidewalk or driveway, with a broom, removing sticks, rocks and other items that the lawnmower's engine could propel when it runs. Push the lawn mower onto the clean area.
Grasp the lawnmower's gas tank cap, and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Lift it straight up and off the tank. Pour unleaded gasoline into the fuel tank, filling the tank to the bottom of the gas filler neck. Replace the gas tank cap, and screw it on clockwise.
Turn the oil dipstick's cap counterclockwise to unscrew it, and pull it out of the oil fill tube. Wipe the dipstick clean of oil on paper towel, and reinsert the dipstick into the oil fill tube without screwing it in. Remove the dipstick, and observe the oil level noted at the dipstick's end. The oil level should be above the "Add" mark and at or near the "Full" mark. Add 10W-30 or SAE 30 engine oil through the oil fill tube to bring the level up to the "Full" mark if necessary, but don't overfill the mower with oil.
Wipe all spilled oil and/or gasoline off the lawnmower with a paper towel.
Press the lawnmower's primer button three times firmly, holding it pressed inward for about one second each time before releasing it. A self-propelled mulching mower has a primer bulb, but the other Toro 22-inch models do not have that feature.
Grasp the blade control bar, which is in front of the lawnmower's handle, and press it against the handle. Hold the blade control bar and handle together with one hand.
Place the key in its slot if the mower is an electric-powered model, and turn the key to start the mower's engine. Pull the starter handle if the mower is a gasoline-powered model; pull the starter handle slowly until you feel resistance, and then pull it with sharp force. Let the starter handle return to its former position slowly. Repeat pulling the starter handle until the mower starts.

Tips
- Release the blade control bar from the handle to stop the lawnmower's engine, whether it is an electric- or a gasoline-powered model.
- Refill a gasoline can with fresh gasoline so it is not stored for more than six months. Condensation can build on gasoline, adding water to the fuel and not allowing a lawnmower to start.
Warnings
- Allow a lawnmower to cool before refueling it. Gas spilled on a hot surface can ignite when the lawnmower is restarted.
- Store gasoline in an approved container, out of the reach of children and pets.
- Do not mow grass when it is wet. Mowing wet grass damages the lawn and creates a slipping hazard for the mower's operator. An electric mower can electrocute people in damp conditions if a wiring short occurs or the cord is cut accidentally.
